Welcome, aspiring autocrats, to your masterclass in modern authoritarianism!
Want to dismantle democracy while still looking like you care about “the people”?
Great news: you don’t need a military junta or a golden throne. Just follow this simple guide to manipulating the masses, controlling the narrative, and steamrolling pesky institutions that get in your way.
Step 1: Truth Is Optional. Loyalty Is Mandatory.
In your brave new regime, truth is a suggestion, not a requirement. Facts are for amateurs. You’ll want to repeat your version of reality, loudly, constantly, and without shame. If someone shows you evidence to the contrary, accuse them of bias. If they persist, call them fake news.
Remember: repetition beats reality.
“In the authoritarian playbook, truth is whatever the Leader last posted online, and loyalty outranks fact every time.”
Step 2: Weaponize Fear Like a Pro.
Nothing motivates obedience like a manufactured crisis. Immigrants, journalists, educators: anyone can be transformed into a convenient boogeyman. Paint them as existential threats and promise to “protect” your people, preferably with walls, bans, or uniformed men with sunglasses.
“If you can’t win their respect, terrify them into compliance.”
Step 3: Media = Enemy of the People (Unless They’re Praising You).
A free press is a nightmare for autocrats.
Discredit it early and often.
Accuse outlets of being biased, corrupt, or unpatriotic.
Praise only those who parrot your message.
Eventually, your followers won’t trust anyone who questions you, even when you contradict yourself mid-sentence.
“Why debate your critics when you can just label them enemies of the state? It’s much more efficient.”
Step 4: Rewrite the Rules.
Constitutions are just guidelines.
Laws are for the little people.
You’ll need loyalists in the courts, the agencies, and the election boards, people who understand that your authority matters more than the process that put you there.
“What’s the point of power if you can’t bend the rules until they break?”
Step 5: Never Apologize. Ever.
Authoritarians don’t make mistakes; they double down. When caught, blame your staff, the opposition, or your predecessor.
When that doesn’t work, declare it was all fake news or part of a conspiracy.
Contrition is weakness.
“You’re not wrong; you’re misunderstood. And your enemies? Probably treasonous.”
Step 6: Hold a Rally. Then Another. Then Another.
There’s no such thing as too much applause.
Pack arenas.
Play anthems.
Wear hats.
Say the same five phrases over and over.
Create loyalty through repetition and emotion.
Facts can’t survive a stadium full of screaming believers.
“Who needs policy when you’ve got pyrotechnics and merch?”
Step 7: Normalize the Absurd.
The more chaos you create, the less shocking each scandal becomes. What was once “disqualifying” becomes “just another Tuesday.”
Saturate the news cycle with nonsense until nobody cares anymore.
“Democracy doesn’t need to be overthrown if it just stops being interesting.”
Congratulations, future Supreme Leader!
With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to transforming a restless democracy into a compliant echo chamber.
Just remember: every tyrant starts by convincing people they’re the only ones who can fix it.
If it all falls apart?
Blame the deep state, the press, or windmills.
That always works.
