I have been doing this long enough now to notice the pattern.
People almost never attack the actual point.
They do not walk through the timeline.
They do not challenge the logic.
They do not dispute the facts.
They do not say, “Here is exactly where you are wrong.”
They say, “Cool story, bro.”
Or, “You must be a liberal.”
Or, “Who did you vote for?”
And that should scare the hell out of all of us.
Because once a country stops judging arguments by whether they are true and starts judging them by which tribe they seem to help, truth itself starts to die.
That is the real problem.
We are sorting before we are thinking.
We are checking jerseys before we check facts.
We are asking, “Is this from my side?” before we ask, “Is this right?”
And once that becomes normal, intellectually honest debate becomes nearly impossible. The whole process breaks. You cannot get to the truth if the truth is disqualified before it speaks.
That is where we are.
A person can lay out a clean argument, backed by evidence, grounded in dates, quotes, and reporting, and a huge chunk of the response will still be, “Well, you’re obviously a Democrat,” or “You sound like MSNBC,” or “What about when your side did it?”
That is not debate.
That is tribal self-defense.
It is a way to avoid thinking while still feeling righteous.
And yes, both sides do versions of it. The right does it. The left does it. Conservatives dismiss facts as liberal propaganda. Liberals dismiss people as Fox-brained idiots. Everybody gets to feel superior. Nobody has to wrestle honestly with a hard point.
Different slogans. Same rot.
That is why this feels so hopeless sometimes. People are no longer trained to ask, “What is true?” They are trained to ask, “Who benefits if I believe this?” That question matters. It just cannot be the only question. Because when identity becomes the whole filter, argument dies and propaganda wins.
Truth does not care who says it.
A liberal can be right.
A conservative can be right.
A person you would never vote for can still be telling the truth.
A person you admire can still be lying to your face.
That is adulthood.
That is critical thought.
That is the muscle we are losing.
Once you lose that muscle, everything gets easier to manipulate. The media can frame. Politicians can posture. influencers can cherry-pick. Everybody can feed their own team a version of reality that flatters them and demonizes everyone else. And the public, already trained to think tribally, will swallow it because it feels familiar.
That is how a country gets stupid on purpose.
Not because nobody is intelligent. Because too many people have decided loyalty matters more than honesty.
So now when you present a hard argument, people do not ask whether it holds. They ask where you stand. They ask who you voted for. They ask whether you are one of them. And if the answer is no, they think they are free to ignore the point completely.
That is poison.
Because the truth has to matter somewhere.
It has to matter even when it embarrasses your side.
It has to matter even when it helps your enemy.
It has to matter even when it costs you socially.
It has to matter more than the comfort of your tribe.
Otherwise we are finished.
Not finished in some cinematic sense. Finished in the slower, sadder way countries really fall apart. The common language goes first. The shared standards go next. Then every public argument turns into team warfare. Then every fact becomes partisan. Then power stops needing to persuade because it already knows half the country will excuse anything done in the right jersey.
That is where this road goes.
I think a lot of people know it. I think that is why the emptiest comments are often the snarkiest ones. “Cool story, bro.” “Liberal.” “TDS.” Those are not arguments. They are retreat lines. They are what people say when something landed and they do not have a real answer ready.
So let me say this plainly.
I do not care what tribe a fact comes from.
I care whether it is true.
I do not care whether a criticism helps Republicans or Democrats.
I care whether it holds up.
I do not care who gets embarrassed by reality.
Reality is not supposed to be fair.
That should be normal.
That should be the baseline.
Instead it now sounds radical to ask people to engage on the merits.
And that may be the saddest thing of all.
Because a country that cannot argue honestly cannot govern honestly. A country that cannot separate truth from tribe will be lied to constantly. A country that treats every criticism as betrayal and every uncomfortable fact as enemy propaganda is a country begging to be played.
We all thought we lived in a country where truth would matter in the end.
It only will if enough people decide to defend it before the end.
If this hit a nerve, good. It should. Share it around. Follow EDW. The country needs more people willing to ask what is true before they ask whose side it helps.
