We rolled out of Walla Walla with the windows down, pointed the hood south, and split the run with soft landings at Jackpot both ways, the kind of halfway stop that feels like tradition the second time you do it.

Somewhere along the highway we hit that crossroads jerky stand with the flying saucers sunk into the building (you know the one) and loaded up like kids at a roadside carnival. By the time we drifted into the Golden Nugget, the road had baked the stress right out of our shoulders.

Then Fremont hit like a brass section.

People were smiling at strangers just because. Men and women were half‑dressed and fully alive. Bartenders moved like magicians, dealers laughed with their whole faces, and the canopy threw color across everyone while politics took the night off. It felt like a truce we didn’t have to negotiate, a city remembering itself in real time.

Somewhere between the first neon glare and the third song, I fell hard for craps: fast, loud, democratic. I’m a Come‑line guy now. I said it. Mrs. EDW knows. When the dice heat up and the rail starts howling, you press your odds and let joy do what joy does.

Fremont being Fremont, the street sent us home with souvenirs you can’t pack. A cowboy in a hat, a whip, and not much else slipped a necklace around Mrs. EDW’s neck with a showman’s flourish, and she wore it like a crown. She danced for days, queen of cool, that big bright smile lighting up every block we touched.

I’ll have that image seared in my memory as long as I’ve got one. And because the performers commit and Mrs. EDW is a very good sport, I also came home with an extremely flattering, wildly embarrassing video. We asked for a picture; we got the whole routine. I tipped. Word to the wise: be clear, or your face may be rhythmically sandwiched between two sequined cheeks faster than you can say craps.

We did one detour to Sunset Station to watch the Chargers beat the Steelers with new friends who felt like cousins by the second quarter. At one point I locked eyes with Josie across the bar right as the replay rolled; she grinned at the Yankee hat and still hollered, “You fucking like it, Boston?” That smile with the verbal slap left me feeling seen and adopted on the spot. With Josie there isn’t much middle ground (pack or no pack), and her pack is strong. It’s hard to be apart from people like that once you find them.

We met our daughter in there, the one who brought these wonderful people into our life and, like always, made us proud. She belonged to the city as quickly as the music did. We went for a 21st birthday and came home heavier with people, chosen family multiplying in the neon, new friends who felt old, old friends who felt brand‑new.

If there’s a way to improve it, it’s to bring more of our people next time. Pack the cousins, kidnap the neighbors, tell the group chat the itinerary is “yes.”

Give it up for the folks who make the hum happen. The crews on Fremont who kept the river flowing. The teams at the Golden Nugget who made us feel like regulars. The Cactus Pete’s crew in Jackpot who turned pit stops into home. Housekeeping, front desks, security: everywhere we turned, pros with heart. And morning angel at the Denny’s in the Hotel Nevada in Ely who poured coffee and kindness in equal measure.

Every one of them is part of this story.

Doomscrollers, you feel this in your bones. When we want joy, we drop the war paint and step into the light together. Algorithms can’t dance. Dice don’t care who you voted for.

Love pays better odds than outrage ever will.

I wouldn’t change a thing: the cowboy and the whip, the table heat, the video that will haunt our group text forever, and especially Mrs. EDW ruling the block like it was built for her. We chose to spend our time on people: family by blood, family we found. Always worth the squeeze.

Start a caravan. We hit what we aim for. Place your hearts on the come‑out, press your odds with your people, and let Fremont Street pay out.
