Is anyone else old enough, married long enough, or just mentally running low on RAM enough to reach that stage in a relationship whereā¦
ā¦in group conversations, the only way to remember what you were going to say is to completely stop actively listening to your partner?
Now hold up: donāt cancel me yet. Iām not saying you ignore them. Iām saying you pause the deep, affirming, soul-gazing attentiveness because if you donāt, your own thought will vaporize. Youāll just sit there, smiling politely, while your contribution quietly exits the building like a fart during grace.
So what do you do?
You stop listening. Not entirely. Just enough. Just long enough to remember what the hell you were going to say.
Then, you say it.
Itās exactly what they just said.
Because you didnāt hear them say it.
Because your brains run the same software.
Because youāve been married 32 goddamn years, and now youāre basically two tabs on the same Google Doc arguing over whoās in edit mode.
The best part? You both laugh.
Every. Time.
Because itās not about winning the conversation anymore. Itās about surviving the moment. Together. With grace. And humor. And matching doses of ibuprofen.
My wife and I?
We do this constantly. I was raised loud, Italian, East Coast. She came from a similar bunch of ball busters of different heritage, from friendly Chicago⦠lol.
Talking over people is our love language. Our āI just said thatā moments have become a kind of marital jazz: accidental harmonies, missed cues, and a rhythm only we understand.
If that isnāt love, I donāt know what is.
š¬ 32 years. Still laughing. Still in sync.
And occasionally still full of shit, but together.
Thatās the win.
š Tag someone whoās been married long enough to stop actively listening and still get called a good partner.
ā¤ļø And if youāve got that kind of love, celebrate it loud. We need more of it in this world.
