I’ve lived in southeastern Washington and built strong friendships across northeastern Oregon: blue-collar workers, firefighters, police officers, nurses, electricians, and construction workers. These are hard-working individuals who love their families and communities deeply. And yet, the Democratic Party has managed to alienate many of them.

How? Guns. Specifically, AR-platform weapons. Our rhetoric and legislation around firearms (particularly AR-style rifles) demonstrate a fundamental misunderstanding of the issue. These weapons can be customized, piece by piece, and are cherished by responsible citizens who use them for hunting, sport shooting, and protecting their families.

To them, these weapons aren’t instruments of violence; they’re tools of tradition, craftsmanship, and family bonding.

When Democrats propose restrictions that make little practical sense (such as bans that, in my view, draw unhelpful distinctions among semiautomatic rifles), we build unnecessary walls. We portray ourselves as disconnected and indifferent to the lived experiences of millions of responsible gun owners. And it’s costing us politically.

We’ve lost ground with young men. I think feeling rejected by us is part of that story; it isn’t the only possible explanation.

But here’s the thing: we have an extraordinary opportunity right now. Republicans have made a severe misstep by threatening to sell off public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), lands cherished by outdoor enthusiasts and hunters alike.

These lands are places where these communities hunt, fish, camp, and build family memories. Selling this land to private interests could cost the public access to places these communities cherish. That is a risk they cannot overlook.

The Democratic Party must step forward and seize this opportunity.

Here’s how:

1. Protect Public Lands: Stand unequivocally against the sale or privatization of BLM lands. Reaffirm our commitment to preserving these lands for public enjoyment, for generations to come.

2. Rethink Gun Policies: Acknowledge our missteps and openly admit we misunderstood the AR-platform debate. Clarify our intentions: we support responsible gun ownership. We want reasonable measures like proficiency testing and secure storage, not restrictions on firearms themselves.

By making these commitments, we can rebuild bridges. We can show these hardworking, responsible citizens that the Democratic Party is not their adversary, but their advocate.

If we listen, learn, and adapt, the upcoming elections (including the critical 2026 midterms) could swing dramatically in our favor.

The Iran situation, tariff controversies, and now the threat to public lands have all created vulnerabilities for the Republicans.

The pathway forward is clear. Defend public lands, respect responsible gun ownership, and restore trust.

Let’s break down the wall, reconnect, and reclaim the trust (and the votes) we’ve lost.

The moment is now.
