Growing up in New Jersey in the ’70s and ‘80s, there were important chapters of American history that just weren’t taught, like the Tulsa Massacre or the Trail of Tears.

Juneteenth was one of those overlooked moments, too. For those who might not know, Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865: the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free, nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

It matters because it symbolizes not just freedom, but the long, tough road toward justice and equality, one we’re still traveling today.

So today, let’s celebrate Juneteenth, reflect on its significance, and commit to learning the full story of our nation’s past. Because understanding matters, and freedom is always worth celebrating.
